SPF Explained - Are You Using The Right Sunscreen?

SPF Explained – Are You Using The Right Sunscreen?

When shopping for sunscreen, you can be overwhelmed by the many products to choose from.

To make it easier, we’re here to explain what SPF is and to make sure you’re using sunscreen that’s right for you!

Let’s Start with What SPF Means.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. As Claire explains, the number next to SPF relates to the degree of protection provided from the UVB rays.

To protect your skin from harmful rays, you want to be reaching for a sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 to SPF 50+.

Now You Might Ask, What is UVB Protection?

UVB is the harmful rays that you want to protect your skin against, which causes sunburn and ageing. (Don’t say we didn’t warn you)

The SPF number determines the time it takes for the sun’s UV radiation to redden your skin when using sunscreen products. As Claire states, SPF 30 offers 96.7% UVB protection, and SPF 50+ offers 98% UVB protection.

This is why applying sunscreen is so important to filter any UV rays and take care of your flawless skin!

Back to Basics

Anyone who has tried to buy sunscreen knows the countless choices available. From the different brands to different ingredients, and formulations - Where to start?

As each product differs, understanding the two basic types of sunscreens is beneficial in determining what is best suited for you. The two main types of sunscreen you will want to consider are - physical and chemical sunscreens.

What Is a Physical Sunscreen?

Physical sunscreens are formulated with minerals that include titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. These minerals act as a physical barrier to reflect sun rays off the skin.

Physical sunscreens are thicker in texture which can also result in white hues due to the zinc. Due to the natural formulation, physical sunscreens are best suited for those with sensitive skin as it doesn’t absorb into the skin, making it less irritating.

What Is a Chemical Sunscreen?

Unlike physical sunscreens, chemical sunscreen works by absorbing the sun rays. The UV rays are then converted to heat and released from the skin. The formulation tends to be more of a sheer and lightweight lotion making it ideal for daily wear.
